The last of the 62 960 crystals for the barrel of the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter is delivered. Made in Russia and China from lead tungstate, these crystals are heavier than iron but transparent like glass.


APRIL
An eighth of the accelerator is cooled to below 2 K (‑271°C), colder than outer space. The 3.3 km long ‘sector 7-8’ thus becomes the world’s largest superconducting installation cooled by superfluid helium.
