MARCH

The last of the 62 960 crystals for the barrel of the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter is delivered. Made in Russia and China from lead tungstate, these crystals are heavier than iron but transparent like glass.

The members of the team responsible for the crystal acceptance testing at CERN display the last crystal for the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter barrel.
In the cryogenics control room on 5 April, when the entire sector was cooled to below 2 K for the first time.

APRIL

An eighth of the accelerator is cooled to below 2 K (‑271°C), colder than outer space. The 3.3 km long ‘sector 7-8’ thus becomes the world’s largest superconducting installation cooled by superfluid helium.
