SEPTEMBER
The first phase of the LHC Computing Grid project is approved by the CERN Council.
OCTOBER
The second test string of superconducting magnets reached the nominal current of 11 850 amps. String two, as it was called, was put together to test all of the magnet systems.
OCTOBER
The second and final transfer tunnel from the SPS breaks through to the LHC tunnel. Beams will circulate around the SPS accelerator before entering the LHC and colliding.
