CMS starts its cosmic challenge, a test that will allow a slice of the detector to be tested, with all the sub-detectors combined and the magnet turned on.
AUGUST
A sixth experiment at the LHC is officially approved. LHCf (Large Hadron Collider forward) will study the ‘forward particles’ produced by collisions in the accelerator. The results will be used to inform studies of cosmic rays.
