FEBRUARY

A model the size of the LHC main dipole magnets, measuring 15 metres long, is lowered into the tunnel of the future accelerator.

FEBRUARY

The ALICE experiment is officially approved. Re-using the L3 magnet experiment from the LEP, ALICE is designed to study the quark-gluon plasma, a state of matter that would have existed in the first moments of the Universe.
